The Pet Food Industries Dirty Little Secret - MDM (mechanically deboned meat) & MSM (mechanically separated meat)!
MDM (Mechanically Deboned Meat) and MSM (Mechanically Separated Meat) describe processes where meat is mechanically separated from the bones of animals after most of the meat has been removed through traditional butchering methods. These processes allow for the recovery of additional meat that would otherwise be wasted, often used in processed meat products like sausages, nuggets, or patties. Think McDonald’s pink slime!
MDM (Mechanically Deboned Meat)
• Process: Involves grinding meat and bones together and then using mechanical pressure to separate the meat from the bone.
• End Product: A fine-textured, paste-like meat product.
• Uses: Typically used in lower-cost meat products, processed meats, and pet food.
MSM (Mechanically Separated Meat)
• Process: Similar to MDM, but with a focus on separating even the smallest bits of meat from bones using high-pressure machinery.
• End Product: The resulting product has a very fine consistency, like a paste, and is often used in products like hot dogs or poultry nuggets.
• Regulations: In some countries, there are strict regulations about how MSM can be labeled and used, particularly due to concerns about quality and contamination with bone fragments.
Both MDM and MSM are used to maximize the use of meat resources, though they are typically of lower quality and less desirable for premium or whole meat products. These ingredients are more common in processed meats and in some pet foods.

This means our diets are 100% boneless & we use 100% pure muscle meat to keep nutrients like phosphorous & calcium low to promote urinary & kidney health. Bone is also not entirely digestible & can cause digestion issues which is another reason our diets are great for pets with sensitivities & digestive issues. Further, bone is not a human-grade ingredient so this was a no-no when we developed our human-grade fresh frozen gently cooked diets as a safer, pathogen free alternative to raw pet foods.
